2020 Games Review

 2020 Games Review

1 Star Game

Little Town Hero: Beyond frustrating battle mechanic meant I was unable to complete the first battle of the game after several hours play

2 Star Games

Persona Q2. Too many heroes and an unforgiving battle system. Major disappointment as the last new game of the DS family I’ll play.

Tropico 6. Less missions that go on a lot longer and are a lot easier to fail. Another major

Disappointment

4 Star Games

Detroit Become Human. My only problem with that game is I accidentally ended one of the

stories way too early and missed out on a third of the game

One Eyed Ktuth. Short, charming point and click adventure game

One Hundred Ways. Enjoyable marble runner puzzle game

God Of War. First God of War game I ever enjoyed.

Wattam. Weird puzzle game where you befriend items. From the Katamari people

Maize. Unique first-person puzzle game with friendly corn.

Tracks- The Train Set Game. Simple puzzle game where toy tracks are placed to make a train set

Bear With Me. Noir point and click game with a teddy bear protagonist

Mario Party Top 100. Does exactly as it says, not much depth to this one.

Draw A Stickman Epic Clever puzzle game where you not only draw solutions, you also draw both the character you play as , and the character you rescue.

Inner World Another charming point and click adventure

Castle Invasion Thrones Out. Simplicity and enjoyable tower defence game.

Roundguard. Peggle but an adventure game. But also a roguelike

Slay The Spire. Compelling card game. But also a roguelike

Bertram Fiddle 1+2. Yet another charming point and click game. Yes, I use walkthroughs, I’m here for the story!

Manual Samuel. Qwop style puzzle game where you must convince Death you are a good

person, average gameplay but very funny.

Ethan Meteor Hunter. Well designed and tricky platform game.

Zanki Zero. I found this tricky to the point I thought the game was broken, I really enjoyed what I did play though,

Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep. Yeah, was ok.

The First Tree. Thought it was a game about a fox looking for her cubs, actually about parental existentialism

Shovel Knight. Great platformer but way too hard for me.

5 Star Games

Journey Down Under Trilogy. This game series really reminded me of Grim Fandango and other quality point and click adventures

Mecha Nika.  Sequel to the beloved Agatha Knife, just not quite as good.

Star Wars Fallen Jedi. Finally, a good Star Wars game. But how do I buy a Darth Vader skin?

Scribblenauts Unlimited. A semi open world Scribblenauts game with the focus on puzzle

solving. Best Scribblenauts game I’ve played

Minit. One minute to solve a whole game. Great fun.

Persona 5 Royal. This didn’t make my top ten as while it is an absolutely incredible game, the Royal additions feel more like they should have been paid DLC as they don’t integrate too well into the original story.

Unravel 2. This completely changed my mind, as I didn’t hugely enjoy Unravel but adding a

second character that can fuse into one adds too much to this game.

Minesweeper Genius.. Part minesweeper, part picross, part maze, way better then it has any

right to be

Far Cry Primal. Far Cry game set in caveman times, very different due to the lack of guns,

Black The Fall. The little spoken of cousin of Limbo

Man of Medan Dark Pictures I enjoyed this game in co-op where different people make choices for different characters.

Baba Is You. Language puzzle game, so difficult but admirable in how clever the puzzles are

The Council An above average story adventure game. Hard to say why I liked it as much as I

did, the complex mechanics, weird characters and setting all helped.

Hue. Colour changing adventure game

Far Cry 5. After skipping 4, I really enjoyed 5, and am looking forward to the sequel.

Links Awakening. Despite being a remake of a Game Boy game, this felt brand new.

A Short Hike. Low pressure adventure exploration game

Piffle. I enjoyed this as a free android game but was so much better as a proper full priced,

block breaking game.

She Sees Red. Short FMV game with some brilliant twists.

Abzu. Relaxing underwater exploring game

Phogs. Cute and cheerful co-op puzzle game

Skylar and Plux. Wonderful homage to early PS2 platformers

Aviary Attorney. Bit different to Ace Attorney due to branching paths and connected storyline.

Until Dawn. I really enjoyed 80% of this game, the tense mystery, isolated location and multiple character points of view. Just a shame about the twists nearer the end.

Captain Spirit

Top 10 Games of 2020

Agatha Knife. When I started playing a lot of short games for achievements, I expected most of them to be poor quality. Agatha Knife was the first game to completely change my mind. It was funny, the story and characters are interesting and unusual, and the art is gorgeous. Any achievement game I played after this that I consider really good, I call them Agatha Knife award winners.

The Outer Worlds. Fantastic open world adventure game set on a variety of planets, gameplay with a strong but fond resemblance to Fallout. A little shorter than I was expecting but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Looking forward to the DLC for this

Life Is Strange 2. Excellent follow up to the original game, with a compelling story, and special mention for the Captain Spirit side adventure.

Curse Of The Obra Dinn. I was terrible at actually solving this game, I got maybe less then 1/3 of the characters identified, but it didn’t matter. Exploring the history of the ship with the

unexpected scenes and excellent music was so enjoyable.

Fall Guys. I didn’t think anything of the trailers for this when I saw it. But when I saw it in action it was so compelling and addictive. I never actually won a game however. (Until next year, when I did!)

Luigis Mansion 3. An excellent threequel after the forgettable Luigis Mansion, 2. Many clever

puzzles. The elevator buttons give the hotel a level based structure.

Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair. The closest game to Donkey Kong Country since Tropical Freeze. I never had any hope of getting through the Impossible Lair but the main levels were so good, and the overworld where you manipulated the environment to provide alternate levels was clever

Little Acre. What feels like a Japanese anime but set in the Irish countryside in the 1950’s. No Irish stereotypes here whatsoever. And this game was also made entirely in Ireland. Brilliant.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Got way, way more into this then I expected. Ended up levelling up every single available spirit to 99 and getting some of the DLC characters as well.

Far Lone Sails After compiling this I really enjoyed the on rails vehicle survival gameplay.
